Astronomers have detected oxygen and heavy metals in the most distant known galaxy.
This galaxy is located 13.4 billion light-years from Earth and was formed in the early days of the universe.
Army.Az reports that information about the discovery was published in the journals “The Astrophysical Journal” and “Astronomy Astrophysics”.
The galaxy “JADES-GS-z14-0” was discovered in January 2024 by the James Webb Space Telescope, which observes the universe in infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye.
It takes 13.4 billion light years for light from the galaxy JADES-GS-z14-0 to reach Earth, so Webb and other observatories are seeing the galaxy as it was 300 million years ago.
Astronomers were surprised to discover the presence of oxygen and heavy metals, suggesting that galaxies formed faster than expected in the early universe.
