Ahmet Yiğitbay, a specialist doctor working in the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department of the Siverek District State Hospital in Şanlıurfa, Turkey, spoke about the complications of swaddling newborn babies.
According to him, this can lead to hip dysplasia and disability in the future of the baby. Developmental dysplasia of the hip joint occurs as a result of a disruption in the connection between the structures that make up the hip joint and, if not treated in time, leads to permanent disability. Early diagnosis and treatment of hip dislocation is very important. Full recovery is observed in patients who are diagnosed early and receive appropriate treatment.
The doctor said that a hip ultrasound performed during the newborn period (4-6 weeks) is the gold standard imaging method for diagnosing hip dislocation.
The expert noted that swaddling babies, which has become a tradition for many years, can cause permanent disability in the child. In addition, sudden infant death syndrome can be observed in babies who are swaddled and laid face down. For these reasons, it is not right to swaddle newborns, especially newborns.
