Scientists at the University of Portsmouth have found that ketone monoesters, commonly found in avocados and nuts, can improve heart function and blood circulation in small vessels.
Army informs that the results of the study were published in the Journal of Applied Physiology (JAP).
The ketones in these products can be produced by the body as a result of carbohydrate starvation, a process called ketosis. This process helps the body produce energy from fat, which allows it to survive with low blood glucose levels.
Some studies have shown that ketones can prevent cognitive impairment in people with obesity, but the new study focuses on how ketone esters affect the heart.
The study involved people with type 2 diabetes. To put the body in a state of ketosis, volunteers were instructed to take a liquid supplement containing ketone esters. In the second phase, the experiment was repeated with a placebo. Throughout the study, scientists assessed heart function, oxygen levels in the calf muscles, and vascular function of the participants.
The results showed that after consuming the ketone drink, the participants’ hearts worked more efficiently both at rest and during moderate physical exertion. There was also an improvement in blood circulation in the small vessels.
Scientists explained that ketone monoesters can be obtained not only through supplements, but also through food. Regularly including spinach, broccoli, avocado, walnuts, olive and coconut oil, cheese and fish in the diet can be very beneficial for heart health.
