Germany has apologized to Azerbaijan after President Walter Steinmeier used the flag of the so-called Armenian government that occupied Karabakh on social media.

The head of the German Presidency Dörte Dinger sent a letter to Azerbaijani Presidential Advisor Hikmet Hacıyev.

Dinger stated that the post in question was briefly published on President Steinmeier’s social media account and was immediately deleted after the mistake was noticed. Dinger said in his letter, “This article was published due to a technical error and has nothing to do with Germany’s known stance on Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. I am very sorry that such an error was made. I sincerely apologize for the wrong impression my post created on some people in Azerbaijan.”

Dinger noted that Steinmeier’s visit to Azerbaijan aims to strengthen the Azerbaijan-Germany partnership and support the ongoing peace process in the region.

Before Steinmeier’s visit to Armenia, he had summoned the German Ambassador to Baku to the Foreign Ministry and asked Germany to apologize for using the “flag” of the former occupation regime in Karabakh in a post on his Instagram account.

Steinmeier, who visited Armenia, will later hold talks in Azerbaijan.
